Enterprise or Distributed application:-
1. Web application
Web application is “client server application here the complete application logic will be at server machine and no application logic will be at the client machine”.
Ex:- browser (web client) and web server

Note:-
Client is not a java application.

Purpose:-
To provide dynamic response from server to client.
Web technologies used in the development of web applications such as jsp,servlet,CGI and so forth.

2. Distributed application
If we design and execute any application based on client-server architecture and distributing the entire application logic over multiple machine (both local and remote machines) then that application is called as “enterprise or distributed application”.

Note:-
Client may be a java application or framework applications

Distributed technologies used in the development of distributed applications
Ex:-
Socket programming
CORBA
EJBs
Web services

Distributed applications are executed only by the Application Servers ex:- weblogic and glassfish.

Needless to say web applications can be executed by both application server and web servers.

We can say that distributed application is a collection of EJB or Java Beans executed by distributed containers(EJB containers)

Purpose:-
To establish communication between local and remote machine so as to get remote services from remote to the respective local machine.
